Are a fuse box, fuse board, consumer unit and distribution board the same thing?
In homes, fuse box and fuse board are everyday names often used for a consumer unit. Older fuse boxes may use fuses, while modern units use circuit breakers and other protective devices. A consumer unit is a type of distribution board; the broader term also covers equipment used in commercial premises.
How much does a fuse box replacement cost?
The quotation depends on the number of circuits, the protection required, access and the condition of the wiring. Send a photograph of your fuse box and your postcode so we can discuss the next step. Any repairs identified by testing are explained and quoted separately.
Does a new consumer unit fix existing wiring faults?
Not automatically. Existing circuits must be tested, and any defects found are explained before additional work is undertaken.
Will the power be off?

Planning your job
What to expect from a fuse box replacement
Before we quote
Send your postcode, a clear photograph of the fuse box and details of any known problems. We assess the circuits, existing wiring, earthing and bonding, access and protection needed before agreeing the scope.
What your quotation covers
Your written quotation sets out the proposed consumer unit, protective devices, installation work, testing and handover arrangements. Any additional remedial work, removal of redundant equipment or changes to the agreed scope are explained and priced separately.
Power interruptions and access
The electricity supply will need to be isolated during parts of the installation and testing. The expected duration depends on the installation and any defects found. We agree access and discuss the planned interruption, including any essential equipment, before starting.
Testing and paperwork
We explain the results, circuit identification and operation of the new equipment at handover. The quotation confirms the electrical certification and any required Building Regulations notification arrangements, including any third-party involvement. Replacing a consumer unit does not automatically put existing wiring faults right.
